Overview
Ladakh, a region in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, lies between the Kunlun mountain chain in the north and the Himalayas in the south. Ladakh, land of high passes, being culturally and historically similar to Tibet is called the “Mini Tibet”. It possesses two administrative districts, Lehn and Kargil.
Weather
During winter, from October to May, snowfall is a recurrent. Temperature reaches below 0°C making passes covered with snow . Resultantly, travelling becomes unfeasible. Summer is the only period when the passes are open. Hence, the best time to visit Ladakh is from June to September. Temperature during this time can raise to 33°C. Occasional and unpredictable rainfall may happen anytime.
Tourist Attractions

Fascinating Hemis monastery, the largest monastery in Ladakh, displays Buddha’s massive painting once in 11 years. Beautiful architecture is seen at The Thiske monastery near Leh. Also, gigantic gold plated Buddha’s statue at Shey Monastery is a magnificent sight.
The ancient Gompas of Ladakh include Alchi, Likir and Lamayuru. Lamayuru, comprising marvelous wall paintings and collection of thankas is made of enormous shrines. On the Srinagar-Leh highway, one of the Symbolic historical sites in Asia, Alchi, is loaded with myths and legends. The Likir Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries is located in Likir village, existing since 11th century.
The amazing views of beautiful Nubra valley reminds you of the forgotten 'Shangri La', the trading route connecting eastern Tibet with Turkistan via the famous Karakoram Pass.
Lakes

Pleasing lakes enhance the beauty of Ladakh. The Tso Morari Lake, one of the largest lakes in Ladakh, the Pangong Tso, almost 4,500 meters and 134-km long, Kyaghr Lake, halting place between the Kiangdum camping ground and the Tsomorari Lake, are breathtaking sights.
Cuisine

Nourishing Ladakhi food, Thukpa, a thick soup with vegetables and Momos stuffed with meat or vegetables is delicious. Immense bakeries serve freshly baked bread which can be eaten with locally made Apricot Jam. International meal is readily available at many restaurants in Leh.
NGO has been organizing a two-day traditional food festival since last 15 years, attracting tourists globally. Here, all local dishes, made hygienically, are served. This is done for popularizing Ladhak’s rich traditional culture.
Ladakh Arts and Crafts

A community of metal workers, descendants of artisans from Nepal in 17th century, located in the village of Chiling, expertise in building images. The gigantic Buddha images at Shey have been the repercussion of their hereditary work. Exquisite tea cup stands, hookkah bases, bowls and silver chorten are produced by them using silver, brass and copper.
